Carved Topographies

Prior to Material Recording, Studioaprile focused on sculptural research exploring imagined landscapes carved directly from solid wood blocks.

These works were produced through material removal rather than turning, following topographic logic instead of vessel geometry. Forms reference mountain peaks, ridgelines, and geological formations, operating at the threshold between object and terrain.

Surface marks record cutting direction, erosion and applied force, privileging scale, distance, and spatial reading over function or containment. This research investigated wood as a medium for landscape abstraction, laying the groundwork for later inquiries into constraint, pressure, and material behaviour.
